Honey Madeleines

I’ve always wanted to have a go at  making Madeleines so on a recent trip to Lakeland I bought the specialist tin you need.

madeleine tin

I used a recipe from Hannah Miles The Gluten-Free Baker and they were much easier than I thought. The recipe includes honey, hazelnuts, cinnamon and orange and they where lovely with summer fruit and ice cream.

Wedding Afternoon Tea

A few weeks ago  my daughter and I helped with the wedding preparation for two of  our friend wedding. It was a steep learning curve and one of the main things we learnt was not to attempt a chocolate wedding cake in 30 degree temperatures. The theme was afternoon tea and we spent a very hot week trying out ideas and freezing ahead what we could.

IMG_3221

The  cake for the bottom tier was make using  Martha Stewart ultimate chocolate cake recipe and the top tier was our tried and tested wheat free  victoria sandwich cake. Because of the heat we kept the decoration to a minimum and purchased the chocolate cigarillos, which were brilliant and well worth the expense. First we covered the cake with dark chocolate ganache and then added the cigarillos. we got lots of very good feedback on the taste. The top tier was covered with white chocolate buttercream with lemon curd used to sandwich the layers together.

IMG_3224

We made a selection of small cakes including plain and cheese scones, chocolate brownies, macaroons, lavender biscuits, almond clusters, lemon drizzle cake and ice cream cone cakes which were very attractive and fun,  The cake stands were made using old LPs.

The  hall was decorated using 1001 origami cranes, bunting and pompoms. A thousand paper cranes are traditionally given as a wedding gift by the father, who is wishing a thousand years of happiness and prosperity upon the couple. These cranes were made by the bride and her sisters and it was very effective.

stash stories ♥ day thirteen

modflowers ✿

modflowers: stash storiesAs you read today’s post I will be heading home. All good things must come to an end I suppose, including holidays.

Although there are still a couple more stash stories to share.

Today is day thirteen. Unlucky for some…

stash stories13.3Today’s fabric is a classic Heals design from 1967.

However, now is perhaps the time for me to come clean and hang my head in shame whilst I admit I didn’t know that when I bought it.

I only found out later, after I became friends with Rachel at My Rainbow Vintage Home.

I learned from her that it is called Petrus, was designed by Peter Hall, and is now considered such a classic that there is some of this fabric held in the V&A textile archives.

stash stories13.2I also learned that Rachel had spotted my particular piece of Petrus (which is actually a big pair of beautifully-made curtains)…

Cards and scrapbooking

I’ve put it off for a long time, but I’ve just had my first go at scrapbooking and I think I’m hooked. I realised you can use up at those things that are too big for making cards and actually used some  of the 100’s of photographs I’ve got stored. Many thanks to Angela for giving 3 of us a private scrapbooking  lesson. Have a look at Angela’s blog for some  lovely examples.

IMG_2567I got the idea for this brooch using an old drinks can from an article in Craft Stamper magazine by Elaine Levett. It was really easy, has a foam back and the edges aren’t sharp at all.

Recent makes

Here are a  few of the cards I’ve made since Christmas. Just remembered in time not to put my son’s card on before his birthday as he follows my blog.

As anyone who follows my blog knows I’m a great fan of Craft Stamper magazine and I made these cards used some of my favourite  techniques from resent additions.

IMG_2284

This is the card I made for Valentines day, so simple.

IMG_2196

IMG_2192

I made these two  using patterned background paper with stencilling over the top and flowers made from circles of card and patterned paper with vees cut out to make petals, not as easy as it looks until you get the hang of it.

IMG_2152

made using coloured tissue and washi tape

This one uses coloured tissue paper, washi tape and magazine ads. Luckily I didn’t cut up my sons design and skateboard magazine, sign of relief. I  scanned them in so I can use them again. The images were stamped on to acetate. The steam punk light bulb was from  Mosaic a great bead shop in Leicester.

IMG_2146

I don’t buy many cards, but I thought I’d show you this one, which I got in Nottingham. I just love it, it’s so camp and reminds me of one of my favourite films, The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland (1938)

Die cut flowers

Here are two flowers I made for next to nothing. They are both made using the Tim Holz Tattered Floral die. The red ones uses some silk  from swatches I got for 50p and the other one  uses some gold plastic fabric I’ve had for years. I coloured them with Ranger Alcohol ink.

White flowerThis is a work in progress made using the alcohol  ink that was left on the pad after colouring the die cut flowers with a new die I got at the NEC in November.
